Mission statement
One-Eighth Theater has been creating new and bold experimental theatre projects in NYC and abroad since 2008. One-Eighth is inspired by Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory–the alluring idea that some things are better left unexplained or open to interpretation. 'The tip of an iceberg is only one-eighth of what’s there, so much more lies beneath the surface'. One–Eighth has developed work all around the world and in multiple languages seeking to embrace, learn, and practice decolonization by listening to communities and inviting local talent (performers, designers, composers, etc.) in any project toured. Traveling and connecting is a key to One-Eighth and we have proudly shared sweat and art in Japan, United Kingdom, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Romania, UK, Poland, South Korea, Cuba, Chile, Puerto Rico & NYC. For One-Eighth's Artistic Director Daniel Irizarry, theater is alive in its roots, and believes it will be one of the last spaces we will have to feel and connect as humans. Therefore, One-Eighth’s exploration with technology happens outside the theatrical space and for external enhancement, leaving the audience to experience the piece as raw and pure as possible. No video projections! Just actors, audience and time. No fourth wall. A profound celebration of mistakes and germs.
In 2025, we will be premiering classdismissed.edu written by Robert Lyons at La MaMa’s Ellen Stewart Theater in a Co-Production with Soho Think Tank. Following that run, we will be remounting at the Sibiu International Theater Festival in Romania the critically acclaimed experimental musical My Onliness, which premiered in 2022 in NYC. The piece, which features Deaf and hearing performers, is produced in collaboration with One-Eighth Theater, Soho Think Tank, and IRT Theater.
One-Eighth has been a New York Times and Time Out New York critics pick, received rave reviews from the NYC main press and internationally. One-Eighth theater has developed new work in over 20 residencies, among them the New Ohio Theater and IRT’s Archive Residency, a four-year Residency at INTAR Theatre, and two residencies with Mabou Mines. Artistic director Daniel Irizarry has directed The Inspector General at NCPA in Mumbai, India; tour YOVO to Poland Gardzienice international festival, Encuentros Internacional de Teatro, Cuba and Geochang International festival in South Korea; Staged the world premiere of Witkacy's The Madman and The Nun with Turkish actors in Ankara, Turkey and the World premiere of Mishima's Busu at the Tennessee Williams festival in Provincetown, USA.
